The use of pedobarographic analysis to evaluate movement patterns in unstable total knee arthroplasty: A proof of concept study

Background Definition and clinical diagnosis of instability in TKA is challenging. Sensitive objective biomechanical tools to aid are currently lacking. This proof-of-concept study evaluates the use pressure mat analyses identify abnormal loading patterns associated with within an outpatient setting. Methods Twenty participants were examined: 10 patients suspected unilateral healthy controls. Participants underwent bilateral stance gait tests measuring time limb parameters. Gait was divided into three phases: heel strike, mid-foot toe off. Pressure recordings expressed relative bodyweight. Between-limb discrepancies calculated controls, these differences then compared between groups. Statistical significance accepted at p < 0.05. Results consistently offloaded away from operated limb, whereas controls exhibited more even throughout (p 0.05). greater discrepancy overall step contact limbs (−0.09 s ± 0.16 s; = 0.016) (0.06 0.08 0.04). Discussion Pedobarographic measurements demonstrated mechanical functional tasks warrants further investigation. may prove be a useful diagnostic tool identifying that would benefit revision surgery or physical therapy.
